Apa Yang You Nak, Tak Akan Dapat (Unattainable Desires) by Valen Lim

This work draws inspiration from René Magritte's piece, The Reckless Sleeper. Magritte's original work consists of two parts: one depicting a figure sleeping in a wooden alcove against a dark, cloudy sky backdrop, and another featuring everyday objects arranged in a manner reminiscent of a children's book. These objects are presented as though they were conjured from the sleeper's dreams. The inherent unease and disorientation in this arrangement intrigued the artist.

In Valen's reinterpretation, he revisits one of the darkest periods of his life; replacing the everyday items in the original piece with those that hold personal significance to him. This transformation enables him to explore the inherent meaning behind these objects, and imbues the piece with a more whimsical and lighthearted essence.

He works across a range of fields, including brand identity, print graphics, typography and illustration.
