In Thailand, there are many beliefs and talismans that inform the faiths and ideologies of the people. This piece is inspired by Andy Warhol's series of Marilyn Monroe screenprints, created after the iconic actress' tragic death. Like many of Warhol's works, the series is a commentary on American pop culture and celebrity status. In Tanpopoe's reinterpretation, the artist depicts their original character—a representation of themself—donning religious items such as an amulet and a Buddha statue. By transforming themself into a pop culture icon, Tanpopoe hopes to encourage others to believe in their work.
