Inspired by Caravaggio's second interpretation of The Conversion of Saint Paul, Phua’s work titled Light Seeker explores a spiritual transformation that can occur close to the end of one's life.

The composition centers around an old Chinese man, in a pose that recontextualizes Caravaggio's masterful dynamism as a framework for Phua to process his own experiences. This piece explores the sometimes arbitrary nature of falling into newfound faith, almost as if by accident.

Artist Bio:

Phua Juan Yong is a visual artist exploring the still and solemn facets of human nature through figuration and expressionism. Often drawing from memories, his pieces emerge as abstracted versions of reality. His practice was initially centered around pursuing the physical qualities of paintings through digital means. That fascination has since evolved to interrogate the broader relationship between the physical and the digital within his process of making. This process combines digital tools like VR sculpting and 3D rendering with physical media such as painting and printmaking. His works have spanned projection mapping on National Gallery, music videos for local artists, NFT exhibitions in digital spaces, and have been featured on Nowness Asia Picks, Men's Folio and at Singapore Art Week.
