The Lady with Apir is a play on Gustav Klimt’s Lady with a Fan. Portrayed here is Putri Gandingan, the lead female role in Singkil. A Filipino folk dance that originated from the Maranao people who inhabit the shores of Lake Lanao, Singkil is derived from a story in the Darangen, the Maranao interpretation of the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. The Singkil princess is known for her intricate Sarimanok headpiece and apir fans.
Gustav’s iconic Art Nouveau style features heavy use of abstraction, lots of colour, and flowy intricate details. Much can be found similar to Maranao textile patterns and the Sarimanok, a ubiquitous symbol of Maranao art.
