The work is inspired by Picasso’s The Girl Before A Mirror. The painting can be interpreted either as a woman seeing herself as an old woman, or that it’s a woman seeing all the flaws in herself that the world doesn’t see.
Cynch (the lady and the mother of the child in the artwork) and Alan had already been in discussions about how he could create something out of her photography. Fortunately, the “reinterpretation” theme of this exhibition helped set the stage for what he wanted to show: a woman and her reflection staring and photographing the world looking at her, conscious of how she is being seen, while she is seeing herself.
